Build the expertise organisations need, and the credential that proves it.

Environmental management is evolving. Regulatory expectations are rising. Organisations need people who don't just know what ISO 14001:2026 says; they need people who know what to do with it.

This course gives you the practical, working knowledge to interpret ISO 14001:2026 requirements, apply them to real environmental risks and compliance obligations, and support organisations to implement, maintain, and improve an effective Environmental Management System (EMS). When you complete it, you'll hold an internationally recognised Exemplar Global Certificate of Attainment, respected across industries and the world.

Whether you're early in your career, expanding your professional scope, or deepening expertise you already have, this is the course that moves you forward.

Is the ISO 14001:2026 Specialist course right for you?

This course is for people who need more than awareness. It's for those who want the confidence to guide implementation, support audit readiness, and contribute to measurable environmental performance improvements.

You'll get the most value if you are:

  • Starting your career in EHS or sustainability
You want a credential that gives you a credible foundation and opens doors to roles in environmental management, compliance, and audit.
  • An EHS, environmental, or sustainability professional
You work with environmental management systems and need to formalise your expertise with a qualification that is recognised internationally.
  • A quality or safety professional expanding your scope
You're adding environmental to your existing portfolio and need a structured, practical way to build ISO 14001 competence.
  • An auditor building or extending your scope
You're developing your ability to gather and evaluate audit evidence, understand clause requirements, and assess conformity — whether internally or as you move toward external audit roles.

After completing this course, you'll be able to:

  • Explain the core principles embedded in ISO 14001 — High Level Structure, Risk-Based Thinking, Continual Improvement, and Documented Information — and describe how each clause (4–10) contributes to the intended outcomes of an EMS
  • Identify the PDCA cycle within the clause structure and explain how it drives continual environmental improvement
  • Define and apply key ISO 14001 terms including environmental aspect, environmental impact, significant environmental aspect, life cycle perspective, environmental performance, and protection of the environment
  • Describe the intended outcomes of the standard and explain what "shall" and "should" mean in the context of a management system audit
  • Demonstrate awareness of the internal and external issues, interested parties, and compliance obligations that shape an organisation's EMS — and explain how those obligations are integrated into the management system
  • Explain the role of the Environmental Policy and its influence across the broader management system
  • Determine an organisation's significant environmental aspects across its activities, products, and services — applying a life cycle perspective and appropriate significance criteria
  • Identify applicable legislative and other compliance obligations relevant to an organisation's context
  • Evaluate the organisation's plan to address significant environmental aspects — and identify where plans are incomplete or inadequate
  • Review environmental objectives and assess whether they meet the requirements of the standard, including whether appropriate actions have been planned for their achievement
  • Evaluate an organisation's monitoring, measurement, analysis, and evaluation processes — and determine whether they are capable of measuring performance against objectives and compliance obligations
  • Determine appropriate audit evidence for key clause requirements including resources, competence, and awareness
  • Identify potential emergency situations relevant to an organisation's operational context, considering onsite hazards, hazards from nearby facilities, and natural environment risks
  • Promote yourself as a competent, internationally recognised EMS Specialist with an Exemplar Global Certificate of Attainment

Common Questions

What is an ISO 14001 EMS Specialist?

An ISO 14001 EMS Specialist is a professional who has demonstrated the knowledge and skills to interpret and apply the requirements of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems standard. They support organisations to design, implement, and maintain effective EMSs — identifying significant environmental aspects, meeting compliance obligations, and preparing for internal and external certification audits.

What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is the international standard that sets out the requirements for an Environmental Management System (EMS). It provides a structured framework for organisations to manage their environmental responsibilities, reduce their environmental impact, and demonstrate ongoing improvement in environmental performance. It is applicable to any organisation, regardless of size, industry, or location.

What does the EMS Specialist course cover?

The course covers the full clause structure of ISO 14001 (clauses 3–10), including context of the organisation, leadership, planning, support, operations, performance evaluation, and improvement. You'll develop the competence to interpret requirements, identify and evaluate environmental aspects and impacts, assess compliance obligations, determine audit evidence, and support organisations to implement and maintain an effective EMS.

Is this course internationally recognised?

Yes. Successful completion earns you an Exemplar Global Certificate of Attainment. Exemplar Global is a globally recognised personnel and training provider certification body with a presence across industries worldwide.

Do I need to purchase a copy of ISO 14001 to complete this course?

No. All relevant clause content is included within your course materials. A separate copy of the standard is not required.

How is the course assessed?

Assessment is integrated into the course module by module. Each module includes an ungraded knowledge check (unlimited attempts, instant results) followed by a formal module assessment (three attempts, with trainer support available if needed). All assessment is completed online.

How long does the course take?

The course is fully self-paced and completed online. How long the course takes will depend on your level of dedication, experience and leanring style. For this reason, we offer a minimum 12 months access to your course content and offer a platform that is available to you 24/7 for 365 days a year.

What comes after the EMS Specialist course?

The EMS Specialist course pairs well with the Internal Auditor course for those building audit team skills, or the Lead Auditor course for those moving into audit leadership. Combined, these qualifications can support a pathway toward conducting certification audits with an accredited Certification Body.

The Environmental Management Systems Specialist course (Exemplar Global – EM) is delivered fully online and can be completed at your own pace. Structured around the auditable clauses of ISO 14001:2026, each module explains the clause and then provides practical guidance on its implementation and auditing requirements.

The following modules are included within this course:

Module Topic Module Summary

Assessment that supports you — not just tests you

The course is broken into modules. Assessment is built into the learning, so you progress step by step rather than facing everything at the end.

Knowledge Checks

After each module, you complete a knowledge check. Attempt it as many times as you need. Results are marked instantly, so you know exactly which content to revisit before moving to the module assessment.

Module Assessments

When you're confident, you move to the module assessment. It follows the same format as the knowledge check... no surprises. You receive three attempts per assessment. If additional support is needed, a qualified trainer and assessor reviews your responses and identifies the best path forward, then unlocks the assessment for three further attempts. You're never left to navigate it alone.

Your Certificate On successful completion, you receive your Exemplar Global Certificate of Attainment for the EM Environmental Management Systems Competency Unit, internationally recognised evidence of your competence to apply ISO 14001 in professional practice.
