Preparing for a career in third-party management-system certification auditing.

You probably already know how to audit. You can plan, interview, sample, follow the evidence and write a finding that holds up.

Certification auditing asks for those same skills inside a different set of rules. You work with a certification body and follow its processes. You manage impartiality with a client you are not there to advise. You report findings back to the certification body, and you stay within your scope of authorisation.

That shift is hard to see from the outside. It is not always clear how certification bodies assess auditors, what happens between finishing auditor training and being considered for an audit team, or what the certification audit process looks like once you are part of it.

Focus on Becoming a Certification Auditor is a certification auditor course built around that gap. It covers how certification bodies assess, authorise and develop auditors, and how certification audits are prepared, conducted, reported and followed up. It also covers the practical side of preparing for certification body work, including how to present your experience, sector competence and availability clearly.

Certification bodies decide whether to authorise auditors, and for which scopes. This course helps you understand and prepare for that process. It does not authorise you to audit.

Who this course is for

Your certification auditor pathway depends on where you are starting from. If you want to move toward certification auditing and work with certification bodies as an auditor, this certification auditor training starts from where you are now.

  • Internal auditors
You understand audit principles and evidence-based auditing. Certification audits bring a different relationship with the client, the certification body and the scope of the audit, and this course explains what changes.
  • Consultants
You may support organisations through certification. Certification auditing has clear boundaries around impartiality, advice and decision-making, and this course helps clarify where they sit.
  • Recently trained auditors
You have completed management systems auditor training and want to understand what certification bodies may look for before assigning auditors to audit teams.
  • People preparing to approach certification bodies
You want to present your experience, competence and availability clearly, rather than sending a generic resume and hoping it explains the right things.
  • Certification bodies onboarding new auditors
You may want a short course that gives new, prospective or associate auditors a shared understanding of the certification audit environment. More on this in the next section.

Haven't completed management systems auditor training yet?

Management Systems Auditor (ISO 19011:2026) covers AU26 Auditing Management Systems and TL26 Leading Management System Audit Teams, and earns two Exemplar Global competency units.

How certification bodies can use this course

New auditors often arrive with different training backgrounds, audit exposure and assumptions about what certification auditing involves. This course can give them a shared baseline before the certification body's own onboarding, mentoring, witnessing and scope-specific authorisation processes begin.

It introduces how certification bodies assess and authorise auditors, what evidence may support sector and scope decisions, and how independence, impartiality and confidentiality affect audit assignments. It covers where a certification auditor's responsibilities start and stop, and how certification audits are prepared, conducted, reported and followed up. It also looks at how witnessed audits, mentoring and development activities fit into auditor development, and what it means to work professionally with clients, audit teams and certification body staff.

This course does not replace the certification body's own authorisation, witnessing, mentoring, technical review or internal onboarding process.

What you'll be able to do after this course

By the end of this course, you'll have a clearer understanding of how certification auditing works and how to prepare for conversations with certification bodies. You'll be able to:

  • Understand the certification audit pathway
See how an organisation moves from application to certification decision, and how initial, surveillance and recertification audits fit into the certification cycle.
  • Understand the certification auditor role
Explain where a certification auditor's responsibilities start and stop, including impartiality, confidentiality, assignment decisions, and the boundaries around advice and decision-making.
  • Prepare your auditor profile
Map your experience to ANZSIC and NAICS sector codes, identify the evidence that supports sector competence, and prepare an auditor resume and competence portfolio that explain your background, competence and availability clearly.
  • Understand how certification bodies develop auditors
Describe how certification bodies review applications, use auditor mentoring and witnessed audits, and make scope of authorisation decisions through the certification body authorisation process.
  • Prepare for certification audit work
Follow how certification audits are prepared, conducted, reported and followed up, from meetings and interviews through to evidence, findings, reporting and follow-up.
Focus on Becoming a Certification Auditor
Module 1

Entering the Certification Auditing Profession

Module 2

Building Your Path into Certification Auditing

Module 3

Delivering Certification Audits

Knowledge checks throughout

Both modules include knowledge checks that reinforce the content as you work through it. These give instant feedback and can be revisited as often as you like.

Open book, by design

Your assessments are not a memory test. You are encouraged to refer to the course content while completing them, and a PDF export of each module is provided for note-taking and reference. To be marked competent you must complete all content online, since some interactive elements are not included in the PDF export.

Pre-assessment knowledge check

Each module ends with a pre-assessment knowledge check. A minimum result of 80% is required before the module can be marked as completed in your portal.

Certificate of Completion

On successful completion of all three modules you will be issued with a Certificate of Completion for Focus on Becoming a Certification Auditor. This focus course does not carry an Exemplar Global competency unit.

No. There are no formal prerequisites, but the course makes the most sense if you have completed auditor training or have practical audit experience. If you want the training first, Management Systems Auditor (ISO 19011:2026) is the ATOL course for it.

People who already understand auditing and want to move toward certification auditing. That includes internal auditors, consultants, recently trained auditors and people preparing to approach certification bodies. Certification bodies can also use it to support onboarding.

No. Certification bodies decide whether to authorise auditors, and for which scopes, through their own review, training, witnessed audits and mentoring. This course helps you understand and prepare for that process. It does not authorise you to audit.

A Certificate of Completion for Focus on Becoming a Certification Auditor, issued when you complete all three modules. As a focus course, it does not carry a formal Exemplar Global competency unit.

No. There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

However, this course is designed for people who have completed management systems auditor training or who already understand the audit process. You do not need certification auditing experience before you enrol.

If you have audit experience or sector experience, you may find it easier to apply the activities to your own background, particularly when looking at sector codes, competence evidence and possible audit scopes.

It can help you prepare, but it cannot get you work. Certification bodies make their own decisions about who they engage and for which scopes, and no course can guarantee that. What it gives you is a clearer view of the pathway and a clearer way to present your experience, competence and availability.

Certification bodies decide who they authorise, so the route runs through them. It usually runs from auditor training, to building audit and sector experience, to approaching certification bodies with a clear resume and competence portfolio. Each certification body then reviews your application and decides on training, witnessed audits, mentoring and scope of authorisation. This course covers that last stretch and how to prepare for it. For the wider picture, read How to become an Auditor.

Yes. A certification body can use it to give new, prospective or associate auditors a shared baseline before its own onboarding, mentoring, witnessing and scope-specific authorisation processes. It does not replace any of them.

No. Witnessed audits, mentoring, technical review and authorisation stay with the certification body. The course explains how they fit into auditor development, so you know what to expect when you go through them.

Yes, if you want to move from internal audits toward certification audit work. The course focuses on what changes when you work with a certification body, so it is not an internal audit course. For internal audit leadership, see Focus on Internal Audit Leadership.

Fully online and self-paced, across three modules.

About half a day of full-time study, or 4 CPD hours, across all three modules. It is self-paced, so you can spread it over whatever timeframe suits you.

All three modules and a Certificate of Completion when you complete the course.
